The Central Electoral Commission points out to the candidates registered for the position of local councilor and/or mayor who fall under the provisions of Article 16(3) of the Electoral Code that they must suspend their activity at the office they hold since the start of the electoral campaign.
The persons who fall under these provisions are:
- deputy prime ministers, ministers and ex-officio members of the Government;
- Secretary General of the Executive Office of the President of the Republic Of Moldova, Secretary General of the Parliament, Secretary General of the Government, deputy secretaries general of the Government, secretaries of state, secretaries general of ministries;
- heads and deputy heads of central public authorities and of organizational structures within their competence;
- district chairpersons and vice-chairpersons;
- mayors and deputy mayors;
- city district administrators and vice-administrators;
- secretaries of local councils and of city district administrations;
- officials/employees who have the obligation to suspend their work/job relations according to special legal provisions governing their activity.
These persons must comply with the legal framework for conflicts of interest and incompatibilities and with other restrictions and limitations set by special legal provisions, including for the purpose of preventing the illicit use of administrative resources during the election period.
If the electoral body finds that the candidate who has this obligation has not been suspended from office, it shall make a decision to cancel the registration of the independent candidate or to exclude the candidate from the candidate list.
